He transferred to the Camel Corps, 5th May, 1916 and moved to Abbassia, near Cairo before moving into the western desert.

On 7th & 8th June, 1916 he was admitted to hospitals at Kharga and Sherika suffering from sandfly fever. He was discharged back to duty 20th June, 1916 to Kharga.

Less than a month later, he reported sick again at Sherika, 4th August. He was moved to hospital at Cairo, 25th August, 1916.

By 20th November, 1916 he had been declared medically unfit for service (cardiac dilation) and was returned from Suez on HMAT Ayrshire arriving in Melbourne, 30 December, 1916.

He was admitted to the 1st General Hospital, Keswick 1st January 1917 and released 7th March 1917.  He was discharged from service 4th April, 1917 as medically unfit and was granted a pension.
