Early life

In Barnawartha on Sunday the 12th of March 1893, Charles Lyle Young was born to Robert Edward Young and Beatrice nee McNicoll of Lansell Road, Toorak. He lived on a farm working for his parents throughout his early life up to the year 1909. When at 16 years old, he went to study at Geelong College as a boarder. Charles only studied at the college till 1910, when he left school to work as a station overseer at Brell Plains Station, Corowa, New South Wales. Before the war started, he also had worked at a stock and station agent’s office. Prior to enlistment, he had gained four years of military experience with the Senior Cadets. Also, he was well-known throughout Riverina as a good horseman, cricket and tennis player.
