Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
104 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 9th September 1915, Private Charles Lindsay Davis, 19th Battalion, carpenter from "Oxton Cottage," 24 Morgan Street, Adamstown, New South Wales, died of wounds (GSW abdomen) sustained during the Gallipoli Campaign, age 19 years 8 months.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 1st January 1896 to James Arthur Thomas and Jessie Crawford (died 1949) Davis, Charles enlisted March 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Mr Davis was shot by a sniper when leaving the trenches and died at the 16th Casualty Clearing Station.

Charles’s name has been inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial (Panel 64), Gallipoli, Turkey.

Mr Davis has also been honoured on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, Book of Gold, Adamstown Methodist Church Honour Roll and the Newcastle 39th Fortress Company, Australian Engineers Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 15th October 1921). Name not inscribed on the Newcastle Master Builders Association Roll Of Honour.
Unfortunately, Charles has not been memorialised on his parent’s headstone, and I am unable to erect a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies at the gravesite to honour their son’s supreme sacrifice during The Great War.
Younger brother James Ernest (Reg No-66308) also served 1st A.I.F.
Older brother Arthur Thomas (Reg No-2601) also served 1st A.I.F.
Lest We Forget.
