John Moore was the son of Samuel Ernest and Mary Moore of Rockhampton, Queensland. He was born at Barcaldine, Queensland.
John only joined the 47th Battalion in Belgium in January 1918. He was reported missing during the desperate fighting near Dernancourt on 5 April 1918. His burial place was not found after the war.
On 13 September 1978 his intermingled remains were discovered buried in a collective grave beside the railway line at Dernancourt with 7225 Pte. A.C.H. Rockliff and 3233 Pte W.R. Tedford. The men were identified through the presence of their identity discs and they were reinterred in a collective plot at the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France, the reburial taking place on 29 November 1978.
John’s twin brother, 5245 Private Lewis Moore 49th Battalion AIF was also present at Dernancourt in 1918, and made many efforts to discover the fate of his brother. He returned to Australia in 1919.
