Served during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

72 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 6th April 1949, Sergeant Edward Bede Ryan, 13th Battalion (Reg No-4290), clerk from Prince Street, Waratah, New South Wales and 46 Edith Street, Waratah, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. CATHOLIC 2-40. 13.

Born at Cooks Hill, New South Wales on the 4th September 1891 to Martin Frances E and Margaret (Margot) Jean Ryan; husband of Hildegarde Margaret Ryan nee O'Brien (married 1923, Waratah, N.S.W., died 1972), Edward enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 14.8.1916 (GSW left arm, mild -  Edward returned home June 1919, being discharged on the 4th August 1919.

Mr Ryan’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Surf Club & Life-Saving Brigade Honor Roll (photo, unveiled on the 14th July 1918, 194 names now inscribed, 24 Fallen) and the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll.

There is no indication inscribed on Edward’s headstone of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Lest We Forget.
