Archibald left Adelaide on the Seeang Bee on 10 February 1917, arriving at Devonport, England on 2 May. After further training at Sutton Veny he was sent to France with the 9 / 5th Pioneers Battalion on 4 December. Archibald served with his unit throughout the duration of the war and returned to Australia on the Ulysses on 22 July 1919 and was discharged on 9 October.

OBITUARY.
Mr. A. E. Thomas.
The death of Mr. Archibald Edmund Thomas occurred at his residence, Toronto Street, Ovingham, on May 19th, at the age of 52 years. Mr. Thomas was born in Strathalbyn and lived here as a lad before joining the S.A.R. as an engine-driver. His remains were interred from his brother's house (Mr. M. E. Thomas of this town) in the Strathalbyn Cemetery on Saturday afternoon last.
