Ricardo Wiltshire Pascoe, son of Richard William Pascoe and Belinda May Alice Clara Pascoe-Hawken (née Wiltshire), was born in Mannum, South Australia on 2nd March 1888. He grew up alongside his sister, Ruby Elizabeth Honora Pascoe-Hawken, who would later be listed as his next kin. Before enlisting, Ricardo worked as a labourer.

Rickardo enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 21 August 1915 in Adelaide, South Australia at the age of 27. He was assigned to the 16th Infantry Battalion. On 2nd December 1915, he departed to Adelaide on bpard RMS Malwa to serve on the Western Front. During his service Rickardo participated in different types of operations in France and Belgium. Rickardo returned to Australia disembarking 26th June 1919 and was formally discharged on 19th August 1919.
