Rupert Charles JONES was born on 27th January 1889 at Deniliquin. He was a draftsman in the Per-Way Branch of the Railways based at Head Office in Sydney from 1st August 1911.

He was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 15th September 1915. He enlisted immediately at Warwick Farm, and was given the Service Number 800. Jones was unmarried and gave his father as his next of kin.

He was promoted to Acting Sergeant on 23rd March 1916, and then to Company Sergeant Major on 30th April and Warrant Officer on 1st May. He left Australia from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Marathon’ on 4th May 1916, arriving in Devonport (England) on 9th July.  In August he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. In November he proceeded overseas to France. Jones was further promoted to Lieutenant on 5th February 1917.

On 2nd October 1917 Jones was recommended for the Award of the Military Cross. It was gazetted on 1st January 1918.  The citation is:

‘As Adjutant, Lieutenant Rupert Charles JONES has distinguished himself by his devotion to duty, extreme care, marked thoughtfulness, efficient administration and organisation, and by the courage and resourcefulness in action and in the line.

He has at all times displayed energy and initiative and worked exceedingly hard and well. His efforts have largely helped towards the success and efficiency of the Battalion. He has the confidence and esteem of the whole Battalion.’

He was given leave in England from the end of January 1918, until early February.

On 18th April 1918 he was severely gassed and admitted to the 2nd Red Cross Hospital at Rouen. He did not recover from the injury and died on 3rd May. He was buried by a Church of England Chaplain in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Jones left in his Will, among other bequests, a substantial life Assurance Policy to Doris Weir Gray, spinster of Marrickville Road, Marrickville.
