Biography

RAMAGE Edward 701 DVR
24th Battalion
1877-1926

Ted, second son of James and Ann (née Aldridge) Ramage was born on 28 January 1877 near Violet Town. Ted attended the Violet Town State School. He worked in the local area as a labourer.

Ted was 37 years old and single when he enlisted at Euroa on 1 March 1915. He was assigned to the 24th Battalion on 29 April, 1915.  He embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT A14 Euripides a week later bound for Alexandria, Egypt.

The Battalion sailed for Gallipoli as reinforcements at Lone Pine.  While the bulk of the 24th Battalion was serving on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Ted was one of a small party of 52 especially chosen to train as packhorse handlers and he served with the British Forces in Salonika.  He re-joined his battalion at Tel-el-Kebir in early 1916.

Ted travelled via Alexandria to Marseilles, France and was posted to Pozieres and Mouquet Farm area. On 30 September 1916 he served as a driver at Ypres. Ted severely injured his right arm and wrist on 30 May 1918.  He was hospitalized in France before being evacuated to the Exeter War Hospital in England. It was there that Ted learnt to write and use his left hand for daily tasks.  He convalesced in England before he sailed on 15 September aboard HS Awara and arrived at Melbourne on 17 November 1918.

Ted married Elsie Maria Nicholson on 4 September 1919 and three days later on 7 September he was discharged from the AIF. Ted and Elsie had three children, Daisy, James and Winifred.

On 16 May 1926 aged 47 Reg died at the Repatriation Hospital in Caulfield and is buried in the Euroa Cemetery.
