Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 23rd April 1917, Gunner James Robertson Rainey, referred to Jim, 5th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-15665), engineer from Nambucca Heads, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at the 45th Casualty Clearing Station after being hit by shrapnel from an enemy artillery shell at Dead Man's Gully near Noreuil, France, age 26.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 18th April 1891 to Robert Snr (died 4.8.1920, Bellingen, N.S.W., age 76, no funeral notice located, buried at Nambucca Heads Cemetery, memorial inscription for Jim on headstone plaque), from Throsby Street, Wickham, N.S.W. and Nambucca Heads, N.S.W. (1917), and Agnes Rainey nee Robertson (died 6.7.1896, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 36, mother of 6, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, ANGLICAN 1-50. 69, listed on Find a Grave sleeping at Nambucca Heads Cemetery?, name inscribed on headstone plaque?), from Throsby Street, Wickham, N.S.W., Jim enlisted on the 2nd October 1915 with the 2nd Australian Divisional Ammunition Column at Holsworthy, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on the 14th April 1916.
Transferred to 5th Australian Field Artillery Brigade 20.9.1916.

Wounded in Action - 22.4.1917 (multiple SW left thigh, left foot, right arm).

Mr. Rainey is resting at Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot I Row D Grave 5.

Place of Association - Nambucca Heads, New South Wales, Australia.

Jim’s name has been inscribed on the Nambucca Heads War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Rainey gravesite in remembrance of Jim’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-50. 69. Note: inscription states Killed in Action, should be Died of Wounds.
