Son of Benjamin Hayes and Susan Hayes nee Sherman of Parrock Street, Graves end, England
Prior to arriving in Australia he had served in the Royal Marines Light Infantry for nine years
Commenced return to Australia on 20 December 1918 aboard HT Somali (originally supposed to return on HT Takada) disembared on 11 February 1919
