Honouring Great Uncle Pte Jack Irvine

I was honoured to attend a Centenary Service in 2017 Yarra Glen, Victoria for my late Great Uncle Private John Frederick Irvine 14th Battalion known by the family as Jack who was killed in action on 11 April 1917 in Bullecourt. Jack was my maternal grandmother Prudence Roberts (nee Irvine) youngest brother. Although not born at the time of her great uncles passing my Mother Nancy Morrow (nee Roberts) (Jacks niece) advised me my grandmother Prue never truly got over her youngest brothers death as sadly both their parents had passed away. Jack Irvine was born in Yarra Glen Victoria in 1890 and his older brother Tom Irvine became the head of the family after their parents died Emma 1906 and John 1907. Jack enlisted on 13 July 1915 regimental number 4223. In December 1915 he left with his regiment from station pier Port Melbourne on the ship HMAT Demosthenes after being allotted to 13th reinforcements for 14th Battalion. Sadly on the day of his death one of Jacks best friends from Yarra Glen Stanley Smedley 29th battalion was also killed and their names appear together on the Yarra Glen Memorial and on the memorial at Villers Bretonneux.
