The youngest of ten children, Fred was born in 1894 at Ovens Vale, Myrtleford, Victoria to Thomas Henry Carthew (b1840 in Cornwall, England) and Margaret Charlotte Macauley (b1854 in Beechworth, Victoria). Thomas was a Tin Miner in Cornwall in 1861 when he emigrated, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Great Britain as a Labourer. In 1862 land in the Running Creek region was opened up for Selection, and Thomas was a Selector on Happy Valley Farm in Running Creek, Myrtleford, Victoria in 1873 when he and Margaret married at Silver Creek in Beechworth, Victoria. Thomas and Margaret raised their family at Running Creek, where Thomas died in 1900.

Fred was a Junior Porter with WAGR in Guildford WA when he enlisted in the AIF in November 1914 - he was serving with the Militia - 86th Infantry Battalion. Fred served in Egypt - including Helopolis and Moascar - as a Trooper and Sergeant (Signaller) with 10th Light Horse Regiment, Imperial Camel Corps 4th Anzac Battalion and 2nd Signal Squadron. He was hospitalised on several occasions - Influenza, Whooping Cough, Bronchitis, Catarrh and Diptheria and in June 191 attended Clarks Business College in London. Fred was Discharged in December 1919.

Returning to Perth WA Fred was a Porter with WAGR before moving to Muradup in Katanning WA in the early 1920s where he was a Farmer. In 1939 Fred married Mary Alexandra McCubbing (b1904 in Perth WA) - Mary was a Typist in Claremont, Fremantle WA, having returned from a trip to England in 1933. Fred and Mary settled in Claremont, Fremantle WA and Fred was an Organiser when he enlisted in the ACMF (Service No:W29344) in 1943. 

By 1949 Fred was living in Busselton WA where he was a Farmer and Mary remained in Claremont, Fremantle WA where she was a Court Reporter. In the 1950s, after a trip to England, Fred had moved to Wattle Grove WA where he was a Farmer and from there to Wonthella nr Geraldton WA. By 1977 he had retired in  Boulder, Kalgoorlie, WA where he died in 1978. Mary died in 1998.
