Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A Forgotten Original Anzac from The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, Honour and Dignity  restored.

88 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 20th February 1934, Lieutenant Arthur Bird Brook, 11th Battalion (Reg No-143), also known as Brooky, commercial traveller and farmer from Murrurundi, New South Wales and Bolton Point, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. GENERAL-33. 59.

Born at Murrurundi, New South Wales on the 22nd September 1876 to William James and Ann Carnegie Brook nee Buick, Brooky enlisted August 1914 at Helena Vale, (Helena Valley), Western Australia.

Admitted to hospital 24.7.1915 (dyspepsia, slight).
Wounded in action - 30.5.1916 (shell shock).

Brooky returned home September 1917 (medical reasons), and was discharged on the 2nd October 1917.

Mr. Bird’s name possibly inscribed on the Murrurundi Shire War and Services Honour Roll. Name not inscribed on the Murrurundi and Warrah Shire Municipality Roll of Honour.

Arthur came ashore at Gallipoli 25th April 1915.
On recovering from injuries sustained at Gallipoli, he served on the Western Front, was wounded at Cordonniere in France 30.5.1916, believed to be buried up to his neck. He was freed when supporting troops arrived on the scene sometime later.

Mr. Brook returned home September 1917. After the declaration of peace, he returned to Western Australia for a short period, and later settled at Bolton Point, N.S.W.

Mr. Brook was unmarried, and is survived by a sister (Mrs. A. Burke, of Bolton Point) and two brothers, who live at Auburn and Murrurundi.

I placed a wooden cross at Brooky’s unmarked grave March 2016, and submitted an application to DVA April 2016 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, but unfortunately this was declined July 2016.

To say I was disappointed with this decision would be an understatement.

A Plaque shall be placed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.

Lest We Forget.
