Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College

Before the War:

Percy Considine was a young enthusiastic man who enlisted at the age of 28 and 9 months on September the 9th, 1915. Percy Considine’s service number was 4475 and was in the 5th Infantry Battalion and the 46th Infantry Battalion. Percy did not go any higher in ranking other than being a private. Percy lived at 12 Coke Street, Norwood. He was born in 1886, and his place of birth was Merino, Victoria. Percy had a father and a mother, but unfortunately, he lost his dad before enlisting but he had a mother to care and love him, who went by the name of Mrs. Katherine Considine. Katherine lived on 93 Hanover Street, Victoria.

Percy was a religious man who was a part of the Roman Catholic faith. His occupation was a labourer. Sadly, Percy Considine had no one to share his life with when he left to go off to war and fight for his country. As Percy enlisted he had to write down if he was a Natural Born British subject and he was. He had to answer questions about his profile and the way he looked. These questions were consisting of: height: 5 feet 7 inches. Eye colour: blue. Hair colour: brown. Complexion: sallow. Weight: 9 stone, 8 pounds (60/61 kg). Natural Born British Subject: yes.

During the War:

Percy went into the war at the age of 28 which was around about the right age for people to enlist. Percy fought and served for the 5th Infantry Battalion and the 46th Infantry Battalion on the Western Front. On the journey to “explore the world” and “amazing adventures”, Percy was assigned to sail with the ship “HMAT, A32”. The boat’s ID number was 180 and was weighed at 11,231 tons. The Commonwealth control ended in 20th October 1917.

Percy Considine's service was recorded on a casualty form:

1.      Percy proceeded to join the 46th Battalion (location: Zeitoun (Egypt). Date: 31/3/1916)

2.      He was taken on strength of 46th Battalion, A.I.F (location: Serapeum (Egypt). Date: 31/3/1916)

3.      He then proceeded to join B.E.F. (location: Alexandria. Date: 2/6/1916)

4.      Percy got sent to hospital, due to being sick (location: In the war zone/field (France). Date: 14/11/1916)

5.      Percy then admitted and transferred, because of Bronchitis (location: In the war zone/field (France). Date: 14/11/1916)

6.      Soon he re-joined the unit (location: In the Field (France). Date: 26/11/1916)

7.      Percy then was reported as “MISSING IN ACTION” (location: In the war zone/field (France). Date: 11/4/1917)

8.      Percy previously reported as: “MISSING IN ACTION.” Army now posted: “KILLED IN ACTION.” (location: In the war zone/field (France). Date: 11/4/1917)

Percy unfortunately had a short life and died very young. Percy died at the age of 30. Percy was reported as “MISSING IN ACTION” then shortly after reported as “KILLED IN ACTION”. Percy was killed on the fields of Bullecourt, located in Commune, France.

After the War:

Unfortunately, there is not much to say about Percy’s life after the war due to Percy dying during the war on the battlefields. But there was a little bit of information on him after the war.

He was reported as “missing in action” on 11/4/1917. Percy’s love and memories are laid in Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. Percy’s grave is located in the memorial as, panel 141. After the war Percy got the standard 3 medals for enlisting to go to war which were: The Star medal, British War Memorial medal and finally the Victory medal.
