Private George Andrew Herbert Davies (Service No:4097) enlisted in the AIF on 15 November 1915 and was attached to 17 Depot Battalion. On 11 March 1916, Private Davies was attached to 20th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East on board HMAT A67 Orsova. Private Davies embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 9 May 1916 on board HT Scotian, and was WiA in France on 20 December 1916 - Shell Shock and Gas Exposure. Invalided to England, Private Davies embarked on 27 July 1917 for Melbourne on board HT Demosthenes, and was attached to 20th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 15 December 1917 (Medically Unfit).
Bert was born in Tatura, Victoria in 1897, second of four children of Arthur Patton Davies (b1870 in Melbourne, Victoria) and his first wife Catherine Bridget O'Neill (b1871 in Melbourne, Victoria). Arthur and Catherine married in 1893 in Nathalia in Victoria, where they settled and raised their family and Arthur was an Estate Agent and Commercial Traveller. Following Catherine's death in 1905, Arthur moved with his children to Sydney, where he remarried (in total, a further four marriages) and worked as a Commercial Traveller/Salesman. Arthur served in the AIF (Home Service) as a Private, Staff Sergeant (Service No:101) from 4 November 1916 to 1 January 1919 with Australian Army Pay Corps - he gave his occupation as Clerk in his Attestation Papers.
Bert was working as a Clerk in Sydney when he enlisted in the AIF - he gave his step-mother (Ruby) as his NoK in his Attestation Papers. Following his Discharge from the Army, Bert was working as a Clerk in Sydney in 1921 when he married Jessie Elizabeth Wright (b1893 in Sydney, New South Wales). Bert and Jessie settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Bert worked as a Clerk and Credit Manager until his death in 1955. Jessie died in 1973.
