Captain Oscar Salter (Service No:1964) enlisted in the AIF on 24 September 1915 as a Private and was attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment when his Unit embarked from Melbourne for Gallipoli on 5 January 1916 on board HMAT A19 Afric. Promoted to Corporal, he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 6 June 1916 on board the Oriana and served with 11th Field Artillery Brigade and 4th Divisional Artillery in France. Lieutenant Salter embarked from Devonport for the RTA on board HT China on 1 May 1919 and his appointment was terminated on 4 August 1919. Captain Salter then served with the ACMF in WWII, enlisting as a Lieutenant (Service No:T40) in Launceston, Tasmania on 22 August 1940. Promoted to Captain in 1942, he served with 6 Field Regiment and was attached to HQ 6 MD at Discharge on 15 March 1944.
Born in St Marys, Tasmania in 1894, Oscar was fifth of twelve children of Simeon Edward Salter (b1863 in Falmouth, Tasmania) and Louisa Lohrey (b1865 in Falmouth, Tasmania). Simeon ( a Store Assistant) and Louisa married in 1887 in St Marys, where they settled and raised their family and Simeon was a Store Assistant.
Oscar worked in St Marys as a Grocer before enlisting in WWI. Following his Discharge, Oscar settled in Launceston where he was working as a Store Manager in 1920 when he married Lola Agnes Lacey (b1897 in St Marys, Tasmania). Oscar and Lola lived in St Marys and Burnie before settling in Launceston where they raised their family and Oscar joined the Public Service as a Clerk. Oscar died in 1980 and Lola in 1989.
