Died on this date – 19th March.... Private Montray Frederick Richardson Bunbury (listed on Western Australian Births, Deaths & Marriages website as Mowbray Frederic Bunbury) was born at Beachlands, Busselton, Western Australia in 1865. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in November, 1916 stating he was a 43 year old, widowed, Miner and Prospector from Perth, Western Australia.

Private Montray Frederick Richardson Bunbury was posted to 94 Depot on 18th November, 1916 for recruit training. He was transferred to 24th Reinforcements of 11th Battalion on 30th December, 1916.

The Officer Commanding of 94 Depot wrote to Adjutant recommending that Bunbury be discharged from A.I.F. stating he was not likely to become an efficient soldier & that he would be 51 on 6th January, 1917. “He is very slow & the ___ parade marching is too much for [him].”

A further handwritten note reads: “have him Discharged (signed) P. Cooper Capt. Camp Adjutant.” The Adjutant of No. 1 Depot Battalion wrote: “_____ Seems that Pte Bunbury is useless” dated 18th December, 1916.

The Adjutant of No. 1 Depot Battalion wrote to OC 94 [Depot] on 18th December, 1916: “How is Bunbury going”. The OC 94 Depot replied the same day stating “No good. Only throwing money away keeping him on.”

Private Montray Frederick Richardson Bunbury embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Miltiades (A28) on 29th January, 1917 with the 11th Infantry Battalion, 24th Reinforcements.

Private Bunbury was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 14th March, 1917 while at Sea with C.S.M.

Private Montray Frederick Richardson Bunbury died at 9 pm on 19th March, 1917 at Sea on board HMAT Miltiades (A28) from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

Private Bunbury was buried at Sea from HMAT Miltiades (A28) on 19th March, 1917. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
