Biography contributed by Greg Towner

From my research:

Horace James Dean was born in Grafton on 18 May 1896 to Albert and Ellen Dean.   His grandfather was the controversial Dr Horace Dean, born in Chicago USA to parents Horace Williams and Elizabeth Dean.   Horace Dean senior migrated to South Australia via England arriving at Adelaide in 1849.   He moved to Tinonee near Taree NSW in 1859.   He was elected to Parliament in South Australia and NSW only to be disqualified ostensibly on naturalisation grounds but there is much more to his story.    Horace Dean senior moved to Grafton and set up in business subsequently taken over in part by Horace James Dean's father Albert.   Albert Dean then moved to Maclean to manage a store there, hence Maclean became Horace James Dean's hometown.   On enlistment he gave his occupation as 'Farmer'.

Horace James Dean's two cousins, Claude and Dugald Schwonberg also of Maclean, also died on The Western Front in 1917.   Dugald was killed on The Somme exactly one month before Horace, and Claude nearly six months later near Passchendaele in Belgium.   Horace was wounded with a gunshot wound to the hip and abdomen during the Battle for Lagnicourt on 15 April 1917 and died later that day after transfer to No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station.
