Hugh Cree was buried on the same day as his death in Presbyterian Section C - Plot 11. He was originally interred in an unmarked grave. In 2019, the Beechworth Cemetery Trust initially applied to OAWG’s to have a full miliary grave constructed for this WW1 Veteran. This was rejected as it was deemed that Private Cree’s death could not be attributed to his miliary service. The Cemetery Trust then applied for and was successful in gaining a $450 OAWG’s Grant which recognises WW1 Veteran’s in unmarked graves. This resulted in a 1st A.I.F. Bronze Military Plaque being acquired and mounted on a piece of natural Beechworth granite on the plot of Hugh Alexander Cree.
