Arthur Percy Rose was born on 24 February 1884 in Goodwood Park, Adelaide. His parents were Charles Edward Stuart Rose and Fanny Elizabeth Dickenson. He went to school locally and later worked as a Clerk. At the time he joined the AIF, Arthur was living at 39 Victoria Street, Forestville. On 10 February 1916, only weeks after enlisting, he married Lucretia Flower Smart. That same year, their first child, Ernest Arthur Rose, was born. Arthur was 31 years old when he volunteered for the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 31 December 1915, joining the Australian Army Medical Corps.
Arthur was first posted to the 11th Field Ambulance, part of the Australian Army Medical Corps. His embarkation roll shows that he left Adelaide on the ship Suevic on 31 May 1916 and travelled to England before being sent to the Western Front in France. His job was tough and dangerous, carrying stretchers, giving first aid, and helping to move wounded soldiers. His casualty records show that he was hospitalised with illnesses such as scabies in December 1916 and with a fever in September 1917. Later, he transferred to the Australian Army Pay Corps and was promoted to Temporary Sergeant.
Arthur returned to Adelaide in July 1919 and was officially discharged from the AIF in October of that year. Back home, Arthur lived with Lucretia and their children. He died on 14 October 1938 at the age of 54, from causes linked to his war service. Arthur was buried in the Australian Imperial Force section of West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, a resting place for many veterans of the First World War.
