Ernest was the seventh of eleven children of William Ebenezer Crole (born 1857 in Richmond, Victoria) and Harriet Mary Parke (born 1869 in Blackeville, Victoria). William and Harriet married in 1888 and raised their family in the Warragul region where William was a Contractor.
Ernest was working as a Farm Labourer at Tullycavey in the Gippsland Region when he enlisted, with his parents' permission, in the AIF. Older brother Sydney Roland had enlisted in 1915 (Private, Service No: 10332), and many other relatives were also serving. Ernest was a Private (Service No: 54867) and was Discharged in 1919.
Ernest returned to the Gippsland Region where he was Farming until the late 1920's. In 1929 he was Farming at Canning Vale in Western Australia, where he married Mary Blanche Tichbourne (born 1908 in Gin Gin, WA) in 1929. Ernest and Blanche raised their children in Canning Vale where Ernest was a Farmer, until Blanche's death in 1939. Ernest then moved to Perth and worked as a Labourer. By 1949 Ernest had returned to Farming at Witchcliffe near Bunbury in the South West of WA. In 1958 he was unemployed and living in Armadale, south of Perth.
In 1962 Ernest married Gertrude Blance Stirling (nee Jordan, born 1901 in Toowoomba, QLD). Ernest and Gertrude lived in Rivervale in Parth where Ernest worked for the PMG before they retired to Mandurah, where Gertrude died in 1968. Ernest died in South Perth in 1991.
