Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Private William Bruce Ayers, was the eldest son of Mr. William Ayers, of Glenair, Avoca, Tasmania, where he had taken up sheep farming. The father was well known in Hobart business circles where he operated a business known as Ayers and Harris, which was a plumbing and sheet metal business. Shortly after his son’s death rumours circulated stating that Mr. Ayers, senior, was endeavouring to arrange matters by which he may enlist, in consequence of the news to hand regarding his son.

Young William enlisted only a few weeks after his eighteenth birthday in September 1914 and was an original member of the 15th Battalion. He was at the Anzac landing on 25 April 1915 and from reports in his Red Cross wounded and missing file it would seem he was shot and killed during an attack on Pope’s Hill on 2 May 1915, however at a Court of Enquiry his death was officially recorded as 9 May 1915.
