John Victor Healey

John, known as Jack, was born 10 August 1917 at Norwood, the son of Walter Healey and Florence Pulham.

He joined the Royal Australian Navy on 11 June 1935, age 17 years and served for 12 years.
On enlisting he was described as height 5 feet 7 inches, fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. Had a scar on the top of his head and boil scar on left cheek. Port of Division, was Melbourne. He was made an Able Seaman on 2 May 1937.

He served during WW2 on various ships, and it was the HMAS Nestor that he won the Distinguished Service Medal for skill and enterprise against enemy submarines. His service the Nestor was from 6 February 1941 to 3 January 1942 and was not on the ship when it was lost, he was on the Rushcutter. Jack’s brother Cyril (Sam) also served on the Rushcutter, but not at the same time.

He was discharged from the Navy a few days after his 30th birthday on the 15 August 1947.

On the 1 July 1944 whilst still serving, he married Hazel Wilson and they had 3 daughters.

Jack died 27 August 1989 age 72 and buried at Enfield Memorial Park. Last abode: Henley Beach
