Biography contributed by Larna Malone

Frederick Rogers was born in Tauranga, New Zealand, the son of Charles & Mrs Rogers, of New Zealand.  He was employed as a Labourer, but had previously been apprenticed in Carpentry.   He was 24 years old when he volunteered for the Expeditionary Force and had served 2½ years’  with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles.

He was amongst the early volunteers for the Expeditionary Force, enlisting on 18.8.14.   The following day he left Bendigo for the Broadmeadows Camp.   He was allotted Service no. 818 and appointed to ‘G’ Company, 7th Battalion.

While at Broadmeadows Camp Frederick Rogers represented the 7th Battalion at a Sports Meeting (6/10/14), coming 2nd in the 100 yards race.

The 7th Battalion left Broadmeadows Camp on 18 October, 1914, and embarked for service overseas on board HMAT ‘Hororata’.   Arriving in Egypt the battalion moved into camp at Mena, at the foot of the pyramids.   (6/12/14)

In January, 1915, the Australian force was re-organized.   In the 7th Battalion ‘G’ and ‘H’ Companies joined to form the new ‘D’ Company.      This meant that all the men from Northern Victoria were together in one Company.

The 7th Battalion was part of the force which landed at Anzac Cove on 25th April, 1915.   Frederick Rogers had a ‘near miss’ on the first day when a shot went through his hat.   On April 27th he was Wounded, sustaining a bullet in his right chest.   He rejoined the battalion on 6/3/16.

Frederick Rogers was promoted L/Cpl in 1916.   In July, 1916, he was Wounded (2nd occasion) sustaining GSW to his shoulder, neck and thigh.    When he recovered he was attached to the Australian Army Postal Corps in London, and in 1917 transferred to 67th Battalion (6/5/17)    He received promotion to T/Cpl (28/5/17) and to Sgt (9/7/17), taking command at a General Course of Instruction in Chelsea, England.   He rejoined the 7th Battalion in France on 1/11/17.

On 8/1/18 he was Wounded (3rd occasion) suffering Gas Poisoning from a Mustard Shell.   He RTA M.U. on 13/3/18.
