Bernard James DILLON - Service No:4325

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces (Army) on 3 Nov 1915 at Longreach, Queensland, Australia and was allocated to the 13th Reinforcements (Service No: 4325 - Rank: Private).

He left Australia, on board HMAT A55 "Kyarra", on 3 Jan 1916 for overseas service in France. On arrival in France on 14 May 1916 he was taken on strength in the 9th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division AIF.

He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry during a raid in France on the night of 1/2 July 1916.

(The recommendation for his award stated:- "Was Bomber for Flank Party 9th Bn. Raid carried out night 1/2nd July 1916. By his gallant and energetic bombing, going forward alone after his bayonet man was wounded, he succeeded in clearing his end of the trench and driving many Germans into the hands of the centre party where they were killed or captured." )

He was wounded in action on 23 July 1916 (gunshot wound to right arm) and was transferred to England for further treatment. On 9 Sept 1916 he left England on board the Hospital Ship "Kanowna" for repatriation to Australia, arriving in Australia on 31 Oct 1916. He was discharged from the army on 19 Jan 1917.
