Died on this date – 3rd November…… David Donald Whitham was born at Newcastle, NSW in 1883. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 2nd August, 1915 as a 32 year old, married, Milk Carter from Marrickville, Sydney, NSW.

Private Whitham embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5th October, 1915 with the 5th Infantry Brigade, 19th Infantry Battalion, 5th Reinforcements. He was taken on strength of 19th Battalion on 5th February, 1916.

On 18th March, 1916 Private Whitham proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 25th March, 1916.

He was absent without leave from 8.30 am till 5 pm on 15th August, 1916 (8 ½ hours). He was awarded 4 days Field Punishment No. 2 on 18th August, 1916.

Private Whitham was admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance on 22nd September, 1916 with an injury to his knee. He was transferred to 2nd Divisional Rest Station on 22nd September, 1916 & discharged to duty on 6th October, 1916. He rejoined 19th Battalion the same day.

On 1st November, 1916, Private Whitham was admitted to 39th Casualty Clearing Station with Scabies & discharged to duty on 9th November, 1916 & rejoined 19th Battalion.

Private Whitam was absent without leave while on active service from 7.30 am on 9th December, 1916 to 5 pm on 11th December, 1916 (87 ½ hours). He was awarded 14 days Field Punishment No. 2 by Commanding Officer.

He was admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance on 30th December, 1916 with Scabies & was transferred to CRS (Camp Reception Station) on 30th December, 1916. He rejoined 19th Battalion on 9th January, 1917.

Private Whitham was appointed Lance Corporal on 11th June, 1917.

Lance Corporal David Donald Whitham was admitted to Hospital on 12th July, 1917 while on leave in UK in London. He was admitted to 1st A.D. H. (Australian Dermatological Hospital) at Bulford, Wiltshire, England on 12th July, 1917 with Gonorrhoea that he had contracted in London between 5th & 7th July, 1917. Lance Corporal Whitham was discharged on 12th September, 1917 & was posted to No. 2 Command Depot at Weymouth, Dorset, England from Bulford on 12th September, 1917.

He was admitted to Hospital at No. 2 Command Depot at Weymouth on 13th September, 1917 with arthritis.
On 5th October, 1917 Lance Corporal Whitham was admitted to Burden Hospital at Weymouth with Dysentry & arthritis. He was reported as seriously ill. Lance Corporal Whitham was transferred to Mont Dore Hospital, Bournemouth on 18th October, 1917.

Lance Corporal David Donald Whitham died at 5.50 pm on 3rd November, 1917 at Mont Dore Military Hospital, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England from Ulcerative Colitis.

He was buried in Bournemouth East Cemetery, Bournemouth, Dorset, England where 10 other Australian War Graves are located.
