Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 8th April 1918, Private Cecil Laurence (Lawrence) Fitness, 35th Battalion (bandsman, trombone player, Reg No-2425), farmer from Mitchell's Island, Manning River, New South Wales, father of two (Cecil Lawrence, born 1914, Taree, N.S.W. and Una Jean, born 18.2.1916, Taree, N.S.W.), was Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell, Villers-Bretonneux, Northern France, age 28.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 19th March 1890 to Walter John (died 17.5.1911, "Waltern", Gulliver Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 63), from "Waltern", 14 Gulliver Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., and Caroline Lucy Fitness nee Hancock (died 2.11.1942, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 89, mother of 9?, 31 years a widow), from "Waltern", 14 Gulliver Street, Hamilton, N.S.W.; husband of Amy Bertha Fitness nee Mudford (married 1913, Taree, N.S.W., re-married to Edward J Kernahan 1921, Ryde, N.S.W., died?), Cecil enlisted on the 10th August 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.1.1917.

Admitted to hospital 16.2.1917 (bronchitis).

Granted leave to Paris from 11.2.1918 to 18.2.1918.

Mr. Fitness is resting at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Plot III Row R Grave 13.

Cecil’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Book of Gold, Mitchell's Island War Memorial – photo 14, Church of England Parish of Taree First World War Roll of Honour, St Anne's Anglican Church War Memorial Vestries, Ryde and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Fitness gravesite in remembrance of their son’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 15 SW. 22.

Unfortunately, no Roll of Honour notices located.
Older brother Herbert Alfred possibly tried to enlist.
