Henry Masson and his brother William Maitland Douglas Masson enlisted together in Newcastle during October 1916. They were both killed in action on the same day during an attack on Peronne by the 53rd Battalion. From the Red Cross statements, the brothers were serving in the same platoon of D Company and were killed within an hour during a long and fierce assault by the 53rd Battalion. They are both buried in the same cemetery at Peronne. They had two brothers who also enlisted, Albert who died of influenza in France three months later and Andrew Masson, who enlisted at the age of 16 and was the only one of four brothers to return to Australia.
