Biography

Gilbert enlisted at Claremont on 10/3/16. He was 26. His younger brother Edwin enlisted 15/3/16 and older brother Cyril on 16/3/16 at Claremont. Their younger brother Allan had enlisted the previous May and was at this time, training in his new regiment, the 40th Pioneer Battalion, after serving at Gallipoli in the 15th Infantry Battalion, from August to December, 1016.

Gilbert had served 3 months Militia training in Zeehan, as was required by men aged 18-25 after the 1911 peacetime conscription requirement. He may have also served in army cadets when a boy of 12-16 or in senior cadets for 16-18 year olds. After enlistment, the 40th Battalion reinforcements trained for several months at Claremont Camp.

Gilbert, Edwin and Cyril embarked from Hobart on "Berrima" on 1/7/16 and arrived at Devonport in England, on 23/8/16. They trained at Lark Hill on Salisbury Plain, for several months and left Southampton for France on 22/11/16.They were billeted at Bailleul and from there marched and occupied the city of Armientierres as reserve battalion of the 10th Brigade. During December, January, February and March, the 40th Battalion moved between the frontline trenches immediately south of the River Lys and immediately east of Armentierres, and supporting Amientierres' Houplines area. It was a wet winter, and there were no major battles during this time. It was a relatively quiet position for a first experience on the frontlines. Snipers did take casualties however. Gilbert was wounded in action on 15th December 1916 and rejoined the unit on 5th January 1917. He was wounded again on 18th April 1917, with a gunshot wound to the side of his face. He was treated by the 2nd Australian General Hospital and then shipped on the "Princess Elizabeth" to England from Boulogue. He was admitted to Edmonton Military Hospital until 7/5/17. He had furlough until 22/5/17 and then spent time on duty at a Depot at Wareham.

Gilbert returned to France 31.10/17 and rejoined the 40th Battalion on 3/11/17. He was detached to the 10th Field Company Engineers on 16/4/18, and rejoined 40th Battalion on 21/9/18.

Gilbert went to Weymouth, England, on 1/3/19, possibly on Repatriation duties. He embarked for Australia on "Karagola" on 30/4/19.

Gilbert received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
