Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Herbert Leslie Schramm was born in 1893 at Port Lincoln to his father Abraham Lincoln Schramm and his mother Catherine Schramm. He was one of fourteen children in the family, with ten boys and four girls. The family lived at Whites River, Port Lincoln. He was described as 5’11, grey eyes and dark brown hair. Like his father, Herbert was a farmer prior to enlistment into the AIF. Herbert had some experience with the defence force as he was in the Tumby Bay Rifle Club for 2 years and was still serving when enlisted.

He enlisted in Adelaide, South Australia on 17th February 1916 at the age of 22 and 7 months. Three of Herbert’s brothers joined the AIF; Captain James Kintore Schramm, who received an OBE later in life, Corporal Frederick Lincoln Schramm (MM), and Trooper Cyril Charles Schramm.

Herbert embarked from Adelaide South Australia on RMS Malwa on 27th July 1916 bound for Egypt. In his records it is shown that Herbert suffered from mumps in September 1916 and was transported to the hospital. On recovery, he had joined the 3rd Training Regiment and was then transferred to the 9th Light Horse. He served in the Middle East.

In April 1917 it was recorded that he was admitted to the 14th Australian General Hospital with a bullet in his left thigh, a message had been sent to Herbert’s mother in Australia stating, “Dear Madam, to advise that information has been received to the regret that Private H.L. Schramm, 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital Egypt, 19/4/17 suffering gunshot wound left thigh No. 2823 Private H.L. Schramm 9th Light Horse Regiment. Any further reports received will be promptly transmitted.” He was then discharged in May 1917 to rejoin duty after recovery.

Herbert survived the war and returned to Australia on the 10th of July 1919. He married Lucy Mary Solly in St Matthew's Church Poonindie 14th March 1923. They had two children John (1926-1926) and Elizabeth (1928-1933) neither survived childhood. The family lived at Tumby Bay.

In May 1926, an article was posted stating how Herbert and Fredrick (Herbert’s brother) the Schramm brothers had won an award for ‘Finest wheat grown in Australia’.

Herbert died in 1960 and his wife Lucy did in 1987. Both are buried at Tumby Bay Cemetery.
