Son of Catherine Sarah McLeod Conran, of Rajawalanwa, Katugaswba, Ceylon, and the late Lt. Col. Lewis Charles Conran

On leaving school he took up station life in New South Wales, and then proceeded to West Australia, and then to Queensland where he was managing a station.  He was a member of both circket eleven and football eighteen.  He left school early.
