Albert Charles Joseph Robinson (known as 'Bert to his family) was born on 26 May 1893 at Tatura, Victoria as the first child of John Robinson (1863-1934) and his wife Mary Ann (1868-1914) nee Poole. His father was a farmer at Byrneside, Victoria after immigrating from Berkshire, England. Bert was farming with his father when he enlisted. Bert was one of four Robinson siblings as follows:
1. Albert Charles Joseph (1893-1917)
2. Frederick John (1897-1977)
3. George Burt (1901-1959)
4. Daisy Sarah Ann (1905-1957) - married McArthur
Bert was named after his two grandfathers, Charles Robinson and Joseph Poole. He had a large wider family with many cousins all settled in the district farming at Girgarre East and CCooma. Bert's family lost their mother at the young age of 46. At the time, Bert was 21 and his siblings were only 17, 13 and 9.
Bert enlisted in Tatura on 13 March 1916 and was part of the 6th Reinforcements in the 2nd Pioneer Battalion. He embarked on the "Port Lincoln" at Melbourne on 20 October 1916 bound for Plymouth, England after a 6 week stop at Sierra Leone. After arriving at Plymouth and further training, he embarked at Folkestone on 5 April 1917 and entered the field at Etaples in France. Within 4 months he was promoted to Lance Corporal and he was killed in action only 3 months later near Ypres in Belgium on 13 October 1917. Bert's father John made the pilgrimage to Belgium to visit his grave before he passed away in 1934.
