Died on this date – 24th June…… Harry Thomas Rowley was born at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England around 1867.
He applied for a position as a Constable in the Borough of Birmingham on 22nd February, 1888.
Harry Thomas Rowley, aged 23, enlisted to 3rd Dragoon Guards in 1890. His Regimental number was 3298.
He married Amelia Moore. Their marriage was registered in the March quarter, 1898 in the district of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England.
Harry Thomas Rowley enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 19th August, 1915 as a 44 year old, single, Labourer from 43 Foucart Street, Rozelle, Sydney, NSW.
On 30th December, 1915 Private Rowley, Service number 4001, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Medic (A7) with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 12th Reinforcements.
He embarked from Alexandria on 29th March, 1916 for B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 4th April, 1916.
Amelia Rowley, Government House, Perth, Western Australia, wrote to The Defence Department, Melbourne on 12th April, 1916 with the following: “Not having heard from my husband, Harry Thomas Rowley since he enlisted in Sydney about October last, and passed through Fremantle on January 17th aboard the “Medic”, I shall be pleased if you will furnish me with full particulars concerning him.”
Base Records replied to Mrs A. Rowley on 27th April, 1916 stating that no report had been received regarding him & advised her that Private Rowley had enlisted as a single man. If she required her name to be recorded as his wife a copy of the marriage certificate would need to be sent in.
Mrs Rowley replied to Base Records on 4th May, 1916 enclosing her marriage certificate along with birth certificates of her 2 daughters.
Private Rowley was admitted to 26th General Hospital at Etaples on 9th June, 1916 from 1st Australian Base Depot. He was transferred to Boulogne, France on 18th June, 1916 & embarked for England on Hospital Ship Aberdonian.
On 19th June, 1916 Private Rowley was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, England with Trachritis.
Private Harry Thomas Rowley died on 24th June, 1916 at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England from an Aneurism of Aorta & rupture.
He was buried in Wandsworth (Earlsfield) Cemetery, London, England where 34 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
