Enlisted and served under alias William John Court

Biography contributed by Michael Silver

William Hume was the eldest son of Beerwah-Peachester pioneers, Henry and Ellen Hume of “Glencoe”, Beerwah. Born in Manchester, England in 1879, he came to Australia with his family as a small child, attended Beerwah School, and worked in the timber industry.

On enlistment in the AIF on 25 September 1914 in Western Australia, he gave his occupation as sleeper cutter. For some reason, never explained, he enlisted under the name of Court (his mother’s maiden name). William served as a Driver with the 16th Battalion at Gallipoli. Sadly, he was killed in action on 10 May 1915. He is buried in the 4th Battalion Parade Ground Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Mrs Hume arranged for a stained glass window to be placed in the Coochin Creek Methodist Church in memory of her son. The window is now part of the Peachester History Committee's collection.
