Albert Gilchrist was born in Sunbury and attended the Sunbury State School. He was a carpenter by trade.
He joined the AIF on 22/7/1915 and left Australia on 11/10/1915 abourd HMAT Nestor. He was part of the 8th Battalion.
The Battalion arrived in France on 31/3/1916 and was sent to an area between Steenwerck and Bailleul to the south of Ypreeau Rosenberg, but in 1931 the Chateau owners asked for the grave to be moved, and he was reburied in the Berks Cemetery Es.
Albert was killed in action, probably by shellfire on 24/6/1916 in the Messines sector. He was first buried in the grounds of the Chateau Rosenberg but in 1931 the chateau owners asked for the graves to be removed, and he was reburied in the Berks Cemetery Extension, Wallonie, Belgium, south of Ypres.
