Jack was the fourth of nine children of William Thomas Otway (b1862 in Dale River, WA) and Susannah Ann Willey (b1872 in Spring Valley, Beverley, WA). William (a Farmer) and Susannah married in 1891 in Beverley WA where they settled and raised their children. Susannah died in 1906, one month after the birth of her ninth child.
Jack was a Labourer in West Dale, Beverley WA when he enlisted in the AIF in November 1915. He served as a Private (Service No:2238) with 10th Light Horse Regiment 15th Reinforcements and was attached to 1st Anzac Battalion Imperial Camel Corps when he was engaged in an attack on a Turkish position right of Gaza on 19 April 1917. Jack was WiA (GSH both legs and right hand) and cut off. He was taken PoW and 'stripped by the Turks and left lying until the next day' (National Archives Australia) and then taken to Hospital at Tel-el-Shara. Jack then worked under a German Company at Belemedik, working ten hour days digging tunnels. Repatriated in Turkey on 21 November 1918, Jack returned to Australia in December 1918 and was Discharged in March 1919.
In 1921 Jack was a Farmer in Cunderdin WA when he married Mary (Molly) Veronica Green (b1896 in Stawell, Victoria) - Molly's family had moved to WA by 1900. Jack and Molly lived in Cunderdin WA until the late 1920s and Jack was a Farmer. By 1931 Jack was a Contractor in Merredin where the family lived until the late 1940s. Jack and Molly moved to Bakers Hill in Northam, WA and then Maida Vale, WA where Jack was a Farmer before retiring to Perth WA in the early 1960s. Molly died in 1969 and Jack in 1970.
