Gerald left Melbourne on board HMAT Armidale on 12 February 1915. Early in his service he was sent to hospital at Anzac on 7 July with diarrhoea and then to Intarfa Hospital in Malta on 16 July, leaving there for service in Egypt on 12 August. Gerald sustained a scalp wound and was shot in the left leg during action on 28 August and was sent to Alexandria for treatment. A bout of myalgia meant a week at the 31st General Hospital in October 1916. Gerald transferred to the 9th Light Horse on 29 December. On 3 April 1918 he was mentioned in Sir E. Allenby’s despatches in London Gazette No. 30746/ 44 for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty. He was wounded in action at Moascar on 3 May 1918 but remained on duty. On 9 June Gerald was promoted to Lieutenant. Having served mainly in Jerusalem and Egypt, after the war he served in Palestine as a Captain with the Occupied Enemy Territory Administration Staff in the 1st Civil Government under Lord Samuel, 1st High Commissioner to Palestine. Gerald was appointed Deputy Assistant for the Administration of Agriculture on 29 April 1919 and was granted his discharge in Egypt on 21 July.

Gerald was the son of Emil Stephen Masson and Sarah Emela Masson nee Andrews.
On 9.3.1919 at St George's Cathedral, Jerusalem, Gerald married Staff Nurse Jessie Mary Busby Andrews.

Gerald passed away on 30.9.1963. His remains were cremated at Springvale Botanical Cemetery. His ashes were then collected and interred in the North Road Cemetery.
