Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
William Johns was killed by machine gun fire during an advance at Louverval, France on 2 April 1917, aged 20. He was buried near Cambrai Rd between Louverval and Doignies, France, but post war his grave could not be located.
William was the son of Thomas and Edith Walton Johns; husband of Lillian Johns, of Glebe, New South Wales. He was the father to an infant boy.
William’s mother Edith lost another son, from a previous marriage, Thomas Dunstan 30th Battalion AIF, killed in action 28 September 1917.
Another brother of William Johns, 6129 Pte. Edward Johns of the Australian Army Service Corps, applied to return to Australia on account of the death of his brother and stepbrother. He was returned to Australia on the authority of the GOC AIF, William Birdwood, during late 1917.
