Hugh was the tenth of fourteen children of William H Guthrie (born 1853 in Donegal, Ireland) and Ellen Jane Long (born 1861 in Donegal, Ireland). Following William's death in 1901, Ellen and most of the children immigrated to Australia, where Ellen remarried and settled in Fremantle.

Hugh was 16 years of age when he arrived at Fremantle in Western Australia on board the Orontes. He commenced work the next year as a Draper's Shop Assistant, and was serving with the 11th Australian Garrison Artillery when he enlisted in the AIF in February 1916. Hugh served as a Gunner (Service No:822) with 9th Reinforcements 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Brigade and 54th Seige Artillery Brigade. He was granted leave between June and September 1919 to assist with harvesting at Vale House Farm in Preston, and was Discharged in December 1918.

Hugh returned to Fremantle in WA and was working as a Draper's Assistant in 1927 when he married Barbara Mary Hicks (born 1898 in Fremantle, WA). Hugh and Barbara settled in Fremantle, WA where Hugh worked as a Commercial Traveller until his death in 1959. Barbara died in 1992.
