Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant John Kaufmann (Service No:3496) enlisted in the AIF on 4 July 1917 as a Warrant Officer attached to AIF HQ. He embarked from Sydney on 16 July 1917 bound for Liverpool on board HMAT Port Melbourne A16 with 9/58 Infantry Battalion. He served in England with AIF HQ London and Army Pay Corps London, in France with 5 Machine Gun Battalion and in London again in 1918 with Repatriation and Demobilsation Dept Administrative HQ and with HQ London. RQMS Kaufmann embarked for the RTA on 10 April 1920 with 58 Infantry Battalion on board HT Naldera and was Discharged on 4 July 1920.
Born in 1887 in Melbourne Victoria, John was the youngest of two children of George Heinrich Kaufmann (b1829 in Hessen, Germany) and third wife Louisa Martha Foot (b1843 in London, England). Louisa immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1855, arriving in Melbourne on board the Calliance. George (a Gardener) was a Widower when he and Louisa (a Shopkeeper) married in Melbourne in 1883. They settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and George was an Orchardist until his death in 1911.
John worked as an Orchardist before joining the Australian Permanent Forces as a Staff Clerk. Following WWI John settled in Hobart, Tasmania where he was a Staff Clerk and in 1926 married Alice Anne Kennedy (b1890 in Southport, TAsmania). John was serving with the Army (Captain; Service No:T394) when he died of illness in 1945. Alice died in 1946.
