Died on this date – 11th September…… Leslie William Stowers-Jackson was born in a private residence at Brondesbury, London, England on 24th April, 1897.

His father Stowers William Jackson died on 19th January, 1901 in England.

According to information provided by his mother for the Roll of Honour – Leslie Stowers-Jackson came to Australia when he was 16 years old.

On 17th February, 1916 Leslie William Stowers-Jackson, a 22 year old, single, Farmer from Hobart, Tasmania, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.).

Private Leslie William Stowers-Jackson, Service number 737, embarked from Hobart, Tasmania on HMAT Berrima (A35) on 1st July, 1916 with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 40th Infantry Battalion, “C” Company & disembarked at  Devonport, England on 22nd August, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 22nd August, 1916 Private Stowers-Jackson was admitted to Military Hospital, Devonport – sick severe.

Private Leslie William Stowers-Jackson died at 5.35 am on 11th September, 1916 at Military Hospital, Devonport, England from Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis. The Hospital Admissions form recorded “Severe type. Mental depression a marked feature.”

He was buried in Efford Cemetery, Plymouth, Devon, England where 48 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located. He has a Private Headstone but his death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
