88 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 17th May 1935, Corporal Thomas Charles Warren, 2nd Australian Motor Transport Company (attached to 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company, Reg No-829), motor mechanic, 11 years with W. Winn & Co, Ltd., from 25a Bolton Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 97 Mitchell Street, Merewether, N.S.W., father of one (Billy), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 47. ANGLICAN 2-133. 78.

Born at Bristol, United Kingdom about 1887 (migrated to Australia 1913), to Stephen and Elizabeth Warren of 8 Sydenham Road, Knowle, Bristol, England; husband of Dorothy Warren nee Pickering (married 1921, Hornsby, N.S.W., died 14.2.1980, age 83, 45 years a widow, sleeping here), Tom enlisted on the 9th December 1915 with the 1st Mining Corps at Casula, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board H.M.A.T. A38 Ulysses on the 20th February 1916.

Granted leave to England from the 2.5.1919 to the 2.8.1919.

Suffering no wounds or illness, Tom returned home on the 24th October 1919, being discharged on the 16th December 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Warren’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle High School Honor Roll, Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Tom’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
