Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Rex Lorenzo was a son of Lorenzo and Harriet Moore of Devonport, Tasmania. His father Lorenzo was a well known solicitor in Devonport for many years from around 1886 when he had arrived from New Zealand.

Lorenzo had three brothers who enlisted, one, 5252 Cyril Arthur Moore 46th Battalion AIF, was killed in action during August 1918. Two other brothers who served in the AIF both returned to Australia during 1919. One of the surviving brothers, Wilfred, passed away in 1924, from gas wounds.

Rex joined up in 1914 with his brother Wilfred in the 15th Battalion. They both served in the landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915. Rex was slightly wounded in the heel on 10 May 1915 and although evacuated to Egypt he was back at the Dardenellles by mid June 1915 and served there until the evacuation of Gallipoli.

Although he was only twenty years of age when he enlisted he was obviously a very good soldier as he was quickly promoted up to Sergeant in early 1916. During the heavy fighting at Pozieres and Mouquet Farms he was twice recommended for gallantry, the Distinguished Conduct Medal, both as being in command of bombing or grenade sections which held or attacked important positions during the almost hand to hand fighting. Also he went out and rescued a wounded Sergeant Moore who was lying out in an exposed position. He was awarded a Military Medal and Bar before the end of 1916, and promoted to Lieutenant.

In early 1917 he was training others in bomb fighting and was seriously injured when a Mills grenade prematurely exploded. He had shrapnel wounds to the face, abdomen and legs and was reported 'dangerously ill' on 22 February 1917. During his recovery he suffered the loss of his left eye and he was eventually returned to Australia in November 1917.

Rex married at the age of 40 in 1935 and raised a daughter. He enlisted again for WW2 service in 1942. He passed away in Brisbane at the age of 77 years.
