Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Born in Paddington NSW, married to Eliza Holland and the father of two small children when he enlisted at 38 years of age. He joined the 16th Battalion at Gallipoli on the 2 August 1915.
He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal because he basically fought like a man possessed for four days at Pozieres during the early part of August 1916, going out on 1-man patrols, in full daylight, digging out men buried from bombardments, and doing much execution with his Lewis Machine Gun with which he worked in a fearless manner.
He was shot through the head on the 30 August 1916 and killed instantly while directing a party of Lewis gunners.
Sadly, his brother 3852 Private George Holland 51st Battalion AIF died of wounds during April 1917.
His only daughter Joan Holland died in Sydney on 5 May 1917. His son WX5725 Howard Edwin Holland 2/28th Battalion died of wounds in New Guinea on 7 August 1945, age 29.
