THE LATE LIEUTENANT E. S. LEWIS.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lewis, of Lockleys, have received news that their eldest son, Lieutenant E. S. (Stan) Lewis, was killed in action on
October 1. He was born at Lockleys 25 years ago, and educated at the Fulham school, where he was highly respected. Prior to enlisting he was
employed by Mr. J. Poole, of Torrensville. He enlisted in August, 1914, and sailed with the original 10th on October 20. He was engaged in
the landing on Gallipoli. He gained his promotions in France, first being awarded. the D.C.M. for conspicuous bravery on the field, and recently
promoted lieutenant. He was decorated in a review by General Birdwood, after serving three years in the trenches.
Biography
"LIEUTENANT LEWIS, DCM.
Word has been received in Adelaide that Sergeant (now Lieutenant) E. S. Lewis, a son of Mr. Thomas Lewis of Lockleys, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantly and devotion to duty. When all his officers had been killed he took charge of his company during a very hot attack and displayed qualities of leadership and courage beyond praise. He personally, and at great risk, under heavy fire, dug out two men who had been buried by a shell in their trench, thereby saving their lives. His example had a splendid effect upon the men." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 20 Oct 1917 (nla.gov.au)
