Son of Arthur and Eliza SMITH, "Tecono", Hurtford Street, Sebastapol, Victoria. 

Arthur William Smith (SN 4309) was Ballarat born and at different times attended the Urquhart Street, Redan and Sebastopol State Schools. He enlisted in Ballarat as an 18-years-of-age, single, Ironmonger on 9th July 1915. He was allocated to the 14th Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in late December. He served for two years before he was killed in action in France on 18th September 1918. He was buried at the Bellicourt Cemetery, France.

A brother, Russel SMITH fought at Gallipoli

It is with deep regret that I have to report that another or our Sebastopol boys has made the supreme sacrifice, namely, Pte. A. W. Smith, who, fell  while fighting for King and country at the front. Pte. Smith enlisted, before, he was 16 and had had over three years' service.  A letter of condolence has been forwarded to the sorrowing parents.
