Leo Alston Burford was born on June 6, 1896, in Dowling Ville, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, to Richard Burford and Elizabeth Pycroft. He had one sibling, a younger brother. Aged only 20 years old, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. Leo was assigned to the 43rd Infantry. 

When Leo was aged only 22 years old, he was tragically killed in action on the 4th of July 1918, during the Battle of Hamel in France. Leo Alston Burford made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. 

Leo's was laid to rest in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery in France. Many brave soldiers are buried where he lays who gave their lives during the Great War. His sacrifice serves as a reminder of the immense cost of war and the courage displayed by individuals like him.
