Private Hugh Bates (Service No:521) enlisted in the AIF on 18 August 1914, and was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion on 19 October 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on board HMAT A24 Benalla. Private Bates served with 8th Infantry Battalion in the Gallipoli Campaign, and embarked from Mudros for England on 4 November 1915 for hospital in Southampton. Private Bates then embarked from England for Melbourne on 17 March 1916 on board HT Ascanius, and was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 25 July 1916 (Medially Unfit). Private Bates re enlisted in the AIF, serving with 8/3 Pioneers Bendigo from 7 June to 20 November 1917. Younger brother Eric served in WWII.

Hugh was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1895, fifth of eight children of Robert Bates (b1867 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Sarah Jane Bellingham (b1870 at Cambrian Hill via Ballarat, Victoria). Robert (a Baker) and Sarah married in 1890 in Ararat, where they settled and raised their family and Robert worked as a Baker. In 1919 Robert and Sarah moved to Melbourne, where Robert worked as a Labourer.

Hugh was working in Ararat as a Baker's Cart Driver in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1916, Hugh returned to Ararat, where he worked as a Driver and Railways Employee, before moving to Melbourne with his parents in 1919. Hugh worked as a Clerk and Driver in Melbourne, and in 1924 married Violet Mary Kilroy (b1893 in Warwickshire, England) - Violet had immigrated in 1920, arriving on board the Demosthenes. Hugh and Violet settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Hugh worked as a Carter and Steward. Hugh died in 1964 and Violet died in 1967.
