Attestation record is under the name of Fred Uren with the service number 1413. 

Son of Richard Uren and Elizabeth Uren nee Williams of Inglewood Road, Bendigo, Victoria. 

23 November 1914 - enlisted at Eaglehawk, Victoria, with the 8th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

13 March 1916 - transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion with the rank of Corporal

22 July 1916 - wounded in action. Wound to the right shoulder

6 November 1916 - promoted to Sergeant

3 June 1919 - awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Citation reads:- During the period 16th/17th September 1918, to11th November 1918, this N.C.O. has served continuously with his battalion and shown fine devotion to duty. During the operations on 18th September, 1918, in front of Jeancourt this N.C.O. displayed great initiative and his ceaseless energies resulted in the men of his company having complete comfort. His devotion to duty and fine example as a soldier during the above period have always been an inspiration to the men of his company
